As of 8 October, 1,948 people are known to have died with a further 10,679 people have been seriously injured and are hospitalized, and 835 people are still missing, according to figures released by the national disaster management agency, BNPB. Buildings, including houses, shops, mosques and hotels, have collapsed, been swept away, or suffered extensive damage.
An estimated 65,733 houses have been damaged and almost 74,444 people are currently displaced. Clean water is still very limited, and hazardous and toxic waste-processing facilities are unavailable due to lack of electricity. Immediate assistance for both shelter and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) are required to prevent diseases outbreak and further trauma.
ADRRN’s member, MERCY Malaysia has received mobilization notice from the Malaysian National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force to deploy its field hospital and assets today.
